Online Databases
| The following online
databases are available FREE to all Library members

Patrons are required to login to access
these databases...
Please Note patrons will REQUIRE
AN EMAIL ADDRESS to register for either the e-services card or
the QPL Account.
Online access
To access these databases away from the
State Library - from
any computer connected to the internet (eg home or office) - you
must be a Queensland resident and:
- be a member of a Queensland public library with a
QPL account (register
for a QPL account - immediate access after email verification). Please
Note when you are asked to select your Queensland Public
Library you must select Hinchinbrook NOT Ingham.
OR
- own a State Library e-services card (register
for an e-services card allowing 5 days to receive your
card);
Why do I have to login?
The State Library of Queensland, with
Queensland public libraries, signs licence agreements with database
vendors to provide access for Queensland residents to e-journals,
databases, e-books and other e-resources. Vendors require these
agreements to prevent unauthorised redistribution or use of copyrighted
works. To fulfil its licence agreements the State Library controls
access to e-resources through login accounts - either e-services cards
or QPL (Queensland public library) accounts.
Database vendor licences may restrict use to State Library onsite
access only or to a limited number of simultaneous users throughout
the state.
Click the button beside the
database to begin searching. You will be asked to login using your
e-services card or QPL account...

SEARCH ENGINES
WHAT ARE SEARCH ENGINES? |
| Search
Engines look through web sites that are registered with them. They look for the terms that
you type into the search box . Read the HINTS below for assistance in getting the
information you are after. |
SEARCH
HINTS |
| 1. CORRECT
SPELLING is essential.
2. No two
Search Engines will produce the same results, so it is a good idea to try two or three.
Always search more than one search engine.
3. Each
Search Engine operates a little differently so read the "Help" provided by each
Search Engine for search tips if you don't seem to be having success.
4. Refine
your search (change and/or modify the words you search with—try
synonyms)
5.
Consult reliable web domains including .gov, .mil and .edu
6.
Follow the 30 minute rule – if you can’t find what you want
in 30 minutes, ask a librarian for help
7.
You
can use “boolean operators” (AND, OR, and NOT) to help you
search. For example, if you want information
about high school or college football, type “football NOT NFL” to
avoid professional football sites.
8.
If you type a phrase, put it in
quotations (“ ”) so the search engine knows exactly what to
find. For example, type “crime prevention” in quotes, or the
search engine will find all the sites with the word
crime in them and all the sites with the word prevention in them, but
not necessarily sites about stopping
crime.
9.
Another important symbol is the asterisk. If you put one after
the root of a word, it will search for all forms
of the word. For example, if you type “music*” you will get
information about music, musicians, musicals,
etc.
10.
Remember: Only about 15% of the world’s knowledge is available on
the Internet. Ask a librarian to recommend
other resources that may have good information about your topic. |
