DAN SHEAHAN’S “SONGS OF THE CANEFIELDS” REVISITED

GOD BLESS OUR POET DAN SHEAHAN THE “SONGS OF THE CANEFIELDS” I’VE GOT

DID BRING ME SUCH JOY IN READING IT – OVER AGAIN AND A LOT

BRINGING IT BACK TO INGHAM LIBRARY – I DAMN NEARLY FORGOT

I WOULD READ ME A VERSE OR TWO – BESIDE MY BED IT WOULD STAY

IT BOUGHT ME GREAT PLEASURE IMMENSELY ITS HISTORY SHOWING ME THE WAY

‘TWAS A RARE FIND LIKE NO OTHER BOOK THAT I HAVE EVER FOUND

HISTORY OF OUR PIONEERING DAYS ENCASED WITH HUMOUR ABOUND

‘TWAS A PLEASURE TO READ AND LEARN IN POETRY OUR HISTORY

NOW LOOKING BACK AND LOOKING FORWARD FOR ALL OF US TO SEE

OUR RAGING RIVERS ON OUR ROADS STILL FLOODING AND COMING IN SO FAST

‘TIS A CENTURY LATER THAT THEY ARE PROMISING NOW TO FIX OUR ROADS AT LAST

HERE IN QUEENSLAND WE ARE ALWAYS LACKING FOR US NOTHING EVER THEY DID

AGAIN THE SPIRIT OF THE BUSH CAME IN ELECTION LOOMING NOW PROMISING TO BRING OUT THE QUID

THEY’RE ALL HERE VYING FOR OUR VOTES – THAT NEVER BEFORE DID COUNT

THROUGH CYCLONES AND DEVASTATIONS THROUGH RAGING RIVERS AND DROUGHT

HERE ON THE LAND WE’RE FARMING OUR POETIC HISTORY A CENTURY CYCLE DID TURN

THERE IN HIS BOOK FOR EVERYONE TO READ – OUR FATE FROM IT’S CONTENTS I DID DISCERN

SO THANK YOU DAN SHEAHAN YOUR BOOK IS WORTH MORE THAN THE PUREST GOLD

YOUR VERSES ABOUT OUR FLOODING ROADS WERE ALREADY NOTED AND TOLD

SO RAISE YOUR GLASSES TO OUR DAN SHAEAHAN WITH A HIP HIP HOORAY

HIS POETRY HAS INSPIRED ME TO TURN AROUND OUR HISTORY AND BRING THIS TO THE LIGHT OF DAY

NOW POETIC JUSTICE IS LOOMING IT’S COME FROM BEHIND TO THE FORE

OUR POETRY AND OUR JUSTICE HAS AGAIN COME TO THE OPEN DOOR

MAY OUR POETRY AND HOUR HISTORY LAST THROUGH MANY A QUEENSLAND ’S ROAR

SHOWING THAT THE POETIC PEN IS STRONGER THAN THE SWORD.

ABOUT THE MOON

There's a man in the moon and it's made of cheese.

Well that's what they told me when I was just three

So they sat me down that July day.

To watch three brave Astronauts go up an away.

To the moon they were going,

and soon I would see,

That mysterious man and his cheese.

But imagine my horror,

Imagine my shock,

When all that I saw was dust and rock.

Oh no, oh no, I've been deceived,

There's no man in the moon

and definitely no cheese.
