The Halifax and Ingham Libraries were
both once located in the School of Arts buildings (shown left). .
Halifax had gone without a library service for some time until in the
early 1950's an attempt was made to reform the School of Arts. This
failed however and the Shire Council decided to open a branch of the Municipal
Library Service in the old Barnes residence which was converted for the
purpose. |

It is possible that this building was
shifted some time earlier from the site where the present Ingham Library
is located.
The Ingham School of Arts building was then
located across the street from the present Library (was then the
Ambulance Centre) on Townsville Rd, beside the old CWA Building.
Enid Deloughery was the
first Librarian. Mrs Hazel Reitano, was
appointed Librarian upon the retirement of Miss
Deloughery, and she recollects that the building was put on high blocks
accessible only by a ladder. She remembers having to climb up and down
the ladder to obtain books while the JL Kelly Memorial Library was being
built (1953). |
