A Melbourne newspaper of 1851 reports the following humorous symptoms of a common ailment of the time - Gold Fever. 

Gold Fever

Along with restlessness and anxiety, the first symptoms are: an unshorn beard, a dirty face and embryo bandit appearance.  As the disease advances the patient sticks a short pipe in his mouth, assumes a red shirt and a pair of moleskin trousers. Finally he is last seen on a loaded bullock dray, provided with a straw mattress, a tin pannikin, a shovel and a cradle.
