The Hinchinbrook Shire is situated in Tropical North Queensland, Australia.

Travel 110kms north of Townsville and enjoy the green vibrancy of the Hinchinbrook Shire. The township of Ingham, the main town in the shire, is surrounded by beaches, wilderness and rural areas.

The Shire has a population of approximately 12,200 residents of whom 60+% are enrolled as Library Borrowers.

Library services are provided to the Shire through libraries at both Ingham (the central library) and Halifax.

Many people travel north to spend their  winters in the Hinchinbrook Shire. The Library  welcomes these part-time residents as well. Many enjoy nothing better than a warm winter and a good book - plus a little fishing when the book is finished.

Australian Italian Festival

Aussitaliano Cavnevale

Enjoy one of north Queensland’s most colourful events and winner of the North Queensland Tourism Awards, the Australian-Italian Festival in the township of Ingham, located 1 hour north of Townsville and 2½ hours south of Cairns.

The annual festival, a tribute to the Italian heritage of the sugar-growing Hinchinbrook Shire, had its humble beginnings as an idea from a community workshop. Today the award-winning event attracts thousands of people to this culturally enriched region of Australia.

The festival presents an exciting line-up of entertainment designed to showcase the passion and vibrancy of Italian culture and traditions. The five-day event held along Ingham’s main thoroughfare, Lannercost Street, will feature fashion, food and wine and fun for the whole family.

Visit the festival website for all the history and updates

Remember!!! The Library has a Community Language Collection (including books and magazines in Italian) for those who prefer to read in their first language. If we haven't got something just ask the staff and we can try and order it through Inter-Library Loan.

The Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre hosts the Hooked on Hinchinbrook database which maintains listings for over 130 organisations and community groups delivering services in the Hinchinbrook Region.
